Victoria's mandatory waste sorting requirements, arriving from 2027 under the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021, will set minimum standards for how businesses separate and handle waste streams. Alongside them sit minimum service standards for collection, meaning the services available to your business should become more consistent and more capable of supporting proper separation.

 

Nationally, packaging regulation is moving toward mandatory design standards and greater producer responsibility for what enters the market. Sustainability reporting obligations are expanding through the supply chain, which means businesses well below the reporting threshold are increasingly asked to supply waste and emissions data by clients who are above it.

 

Landfill levies continue their upward trajectory, which is deliberate policy rather than incidental cost. The levy exists to make diversion the financially rational choice, and each increase widens the gap between businesses that have invested in separation and those that have not.

 

None of this arrives without warning. Businesses that build systems ahead of the deadline treat compliance as a scheduled improvement, implemented at a sensible pace with a sensible budget. Businesses that wait treat it as an emergency, at emergency prices, with none of the operational refinement that comes from time.
