Plastic Free July: How Melbourne Businesses Can Take the Pledge

Plastic Free July is one of the world's most recognised environmental campaigns — and one of the most actionable for businesses. Founded in Australia in 2011, it now reaches more than 100 million participants across 190 countries. The premise is simple: reduce or eliminate single-use plastics throughout July. The impact, when businesses participate at an operational level, is anything but small.
From what we're seeing across our client base, July is increasingly used as a structured reset point. Businesses use the month to audit where single-use plastics enter their operations, engage staff in targeted sustainability action, and build habits that carry well beyond the campaign period. It is a practical opportunity, with a clear timeframe and a community of businesses participating alongside you.
The most effective starting point is a walkthrough of your premises: kitchen and breakroom supplies, incoming packaging, printed materials, and point-of-sale items. Common single-use plastics in commercial settings include disposable cups and cutlery, cling wrap and food packaging, and soft plastic delivery materials. Each of these has a lower-impact alternative available.
Improving recycling and contamination outcomes is also part of the picture. Soft plastics are one of the most common sources of recycling contamination — when they enter hard plastics or general recycling streams, they can render entire loads unsuitable for recycling. Removing them from your waste stream entirely, where possible, improves both your recycling performance and your compliance confidence.
