Insights from Victoria’s Circular Economy Market Report
A Circular Economy Market Report, released in May 2024, has provided a detailed analysis of eight key material streams in Victoria’s circular economy, including aggregates, glass, metals, organics, paper, plastics, tyres, and textiles. The study highlights ongoing challenges with materials like textiles, plastics, and tyres, alongside emerging waste streams such as solar panels, batteries, and wind turbines.
The findings aim to guide businesses and policymakers toward smarter investments and strategies for sustainable resource management. Over time, the report will expand to include more comprehensive measurements of Victoria’s material usage and recovery rates.
Currently, resource recovery rates serve as the primary benchmark for assessing progress. However, developing a specific metric to gauge material circularity will mark a significant step forward. Once achieved, Victoria would lead the nation, as no other Australian state currently has a system for measuring material circularity at this level.
This report underscores the importance of ongoing innovation and collaboration in building a more sustainable future for Victoria.
