Global Efforts Making a Difference

  • San Francisco, USAOne of the leading zero waste pioneers, San Francisco diverts over 80% of its waste from landfills through robust recycling and composting programs.

  • Kamikatsu, Japan: This small town is known for its ambitious 45 category recycling program, achieving an 80% recycling rate.

  • Ljubljana, SloveniaEurope’s first zero waste capital, Ljubljana prioritises waste prevention and offers free services for reusing and repairing items.

What About Australia’s Journey Towards Zero-Waste Cities?

Australia is also stepping up its efforts to combat waste, with cities embracing innovative strategies to reduce landfill dependency and promote sustainability.

As waste generation continues to rise, Australian urban centres are leading the charge toward becoming zero waste communities by embracing initiatives such as:

Melbourne

Melbourne is making strides with its Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy, targeting a 100% diversion of organic waste from landfills by 2030. Programs like kerbside glass collection and food organics bins are gaining traction. Our city has introduced initiatives like the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) program, which turns organic waste into compost, and supports community recycling hubs.

Sydney

Sydney’s Waste Strategy and Action Plan focuses on transitioning to a circular economy, increasing recycling rates, and reducing single use plastics. The city also invests in education campaigns to encourage sustainable consumer behaviour.

Adelaide

Known for its strong recycling culture; Adelaide diverts over 80% of its waste from landfills. Programs like container deposit schemes and innovative e-waste recycling hubs have set an example for other regions.

Brisbane

Brisbane’s CitySmart initiative encourages waste reduction through education and partnerships with local businesses. Brisbane is rolling out initiatives to tackle construction and demolition waste, responsible for a significant portion of its landfill. The city also supports businesses in adopting sustainable packaging solutions.
