Melbourne's Summer Challenge: Using Water Wisely for a Sustainable Future
With another hot Melbourne summer underway, it’s not just the temperatures that are climbing, water use is too. As days get warmer, residents and businesses across the city are turning on taps, sprinklers, and cooling systems more often, placing extra pressure on Melbourne’s water supply.
During peak summer heatwaves, the city’s daily water consumption can rise from around 1.25 billion litres to almost 2 billion litres, according to Melbourne Water. At the same time, rainfall into key catchments has dropped by roughly a third below average in recent years, reducing the amount of water flowing into our storages.
To encourage smarter water habits, the Victorian Government is running the Target 150 initiative — a program that asks everyone in Greater Melbourne to aim for using no more than 150 litres of water per person each day.
By cutting back on water waste, we’re not only conserving a vital resource but also helping to reduce energy use and protect local ecosystems. Every litre saved contributes to a more sustainable and resilient city, especially as hotter, drier summers become the new normal.

Simple Ways to Save This Summer:
-
Water gardens early or late in the day to avoid evaporation.
-
Check for leaks — a single dripping tap can waste thousands of litres each year.
-
Switch to water-efficient showerheads and appliances.
-
Collect rainwater for outdoor use.
-
Sweep patios and driveways instead of hosing them down.
When we each make small changes, the collective impact is huge. This summer, let’s do our bit to keep Melbourne cool, green, and thriving — one drop at a time.
