Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub: A Step Towards a Greener Grid
Melbourne is set to transform its energy future with the upcoming Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH), expected to be operational by late 2025. This project will stand among the largest battery storage systems in the Southern Hemisphere, showcasing Australia’s commitment to clean energy innovation.
The hub will feature 444 Tesla Megapacks, delivering 600 MW of power and storing up to 1.6 GWh of energy. During the day, it will capture surplus electricity from rooftop solar and the wider grid, then release it in the evening when demand is at its highest. That’s enough energy to supply approximately 200,000 homes.
Beyond keeping households powered, the MREH will play a vital role in:
-
Helping the shift to cleaner energy as coal power is phased out;
-
Ensuring renewable energy is used efficiently, reducing waste;
-
Boosting the local economy through job creation and sustainable infrastructure.
By combining large-scale storage with innovative technology, the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub represents a major leap toward a stable, reliable, and sustainable energy system for Victoria.

From a business perspective, the MREH creates opportunities for investment in renewable infrastructure, attracts clean tech enterprises to the region, and supports businesses in reducing energy costs and carbon footprint, making Victoria an even more competitive and forward-thinking economy.
For everyday businesses, this means more reliable electricity, potential savings on energy bills, and the chance to run operations with cleaner, greener power, supporting both the bottom line and the environment.
