Discovering the Merri Creek and Inner North Waterways
Waterways are vital to any city, and in Melbourne, the Merri Creek and nearby inner north waterways offer a beautiful escape from urban life. The Merri Creek, stretching over 60 kilometres from the Great Dividing Range to the Yarra River, flows through Melbourne’s northern suburbs, providing a natural sanctuary for wildlife. Once a weed infested drain, the creek has been transformed into a thriving bushland sanctuary thanks to the dedicated volunteers of Friends of Merri Creek, who have worked since 1988 to restore and protect this vital waterway.
Merri Creek provides essential habitat for native plants and wildlife, including rare and endangered species. Wetlands along the creek support native fish, frogs, and insects, while the surrounding bushland is home to bird species like the endangered superb fairywren. Restoring these habitats ensures the survival of these creatures and helps maintain the balance of the local ecosystem.
We are proud to be members of Friends of Merri Creek and invite you to join us in making a difference. Whether through volunteering your time or donating, your support helps ensure the continued restoration of this precious natural asset for years to come.
The Merri Creek, along with nearby green spaces like CERES Community Environment Park, also provides a peaceful escape for walking and cycling in our ever growing city. These waterways not only support local ecosystems but also reflect Melbourne’s Indigenous heritage and history.
By supporting initiatives like Friends of Merri Creek, we can continue to protect and enhance this natural beauty for future generations. Join us today and help make a lasting impact on this incredible waterway.
