New Rules for Paper & Cardboard Waste Exportation
From 1 July 2024, Australia will enforce new waste export regulations concerning the export of mixed and unsorted paper and cardboard.
These regulations mandate that only paper and cardboard meeting specified processing or sorting criteria will be eligible for export. This policy shift is expected to have some notable impacts on the industry, namely:
-
Processing capacity shortfalls affecting waste management practices in Australia;
-
An urgent demand for expanded reprocessing infrastructure to meet the new export standards;
-
Increased investment in large-scale paper sorting and pulping facilities to meet the revised export standards.
The Exposure Draft: Recycling and Waste Reduction (Export - Waste Paper and Cardboard) Rules 2023 has been released by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, with the final regulations expected to be published soon.
