In our increasingly digital world, electronic devices are an integral part of daily life. From smartphones and laptops to kitchen appliances, vapes and gaming consoles, technology enhances our productivity and entertainment. However, with rapid advancements and shorter product lifecycles, electronic waste, or e-waste, is accumulating at an alarming rate. According to the Global E-Waste Monitor, the amount of e-waste generated each year is increasing by 2.6 million tonnes and is expected to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030. The question is: what happens to all these outdated gadgets, and why is proper disposal so important?

E-waste includes discarded electronic devices such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, televisions, monitors, household appliances, batteries, cables and vapes. These devices contain hazardous materials like lead, mercury and cadmium, which can harm the environment and human health if not disposed of correctly.

Improper e-waste disposal leads to environmental pollution, as toxic chemicals can leach into soil and water, polluting ecosystems. Burning e-waste releases harmful fumes that contribute to air contamination. Additionally, electronics contain valuable metals like gold and silver, which are lost when disposed of improperly, leading to unnecessary resource waste.

Furthermore, exposure to toxic substances from e-waste can cause respiratory issues from inhaling harmful fumes, and heavy metal exposures from lead and prolonged exposure to hazardous chemicals is linked to serious illnesses, including cancer. These health risks are particularly concerning in countries where informal recycling practices are common.
