Victoria Moves Toward a Statewide Standard for Recycling

Screenshot 2025-08-27 144950.jpg

Victoria is rolling out a standardised household waste and recycling system to make recycling simpler and more effective across the state. Under the reform, every household will eventually use the same four-bin system:

  • Purple lid – glass only

  • Yellow lid – mixed recycling

  • Green lid – food and garden organics

  • Red lid – general rubbish

This change is being introduced gradually by local councils and will be fully implemented by 2030.

Who Will Be Affected?

  • Household: every Victorian home will adopt the four-bin system.

  • Local councils: tasked with providing bins and coordinating collection services.

  • Waste and recycling operators: updating systems to better separate and process materials.

  • The wider community: gaining from less contamination, improved recycling rates, and a stronger move toward a circular economy.

Why It Matters

By creating one consistent system, recycling becomes less confusing for households and more efficient for councils. It also means that more materials can be recovered and reused, reducing landfill waste and supporting Victoria’s sustainability goals.

This reform marks a significant step in building a cleaner, greener future for all Victorians.
