Enhancing Waste Management Through Victoria's Latest Circular Economy Regulations
Victoria is forging ahead in waste, recycling, and resource recovery with the Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) (Risk, Consequence and Contingency Plans and Other Matters) Regulations 2023. Designed to fortify the state's circular economy, these regulations address significant challenges faced by the waste sector, from policy changes to emergencies.
The regulations, accessible on the Victorian Legislation website, define essential waste services and outline responsibilities for entities. They enforce compliance through defined offenses and set fees for exemptions, offering flexibility through the power to waive fees by the Head of Recycling Victoria.
In force since December 20, 2023, these regulations are a critical step toward a more resilient waste management system. Recycling Victoria is set to publish its first Circular Economy Risk, Consequence, and Contingency Plan in early 2024. Guidance for responsible entities is expected to be released this year too, with plans due by September 30, 2024.
Victoria's circular economy commitment gains legislative support, fostering collaboration between industry and government. As these regulations take effect, Victoria progresses towards a sustainable and thriving circular economy. And here at Speedie Waste & Recycle we are excited to be part of this transformative journey.
